“As a young singer, I had the privilege of rehearsing my great dramatic roles with my outstanding singing teachers, such as David Jones, as well as with unique personalities of the opera world, such as KS Birgit Nilsson, KS Berit Lindholm, Kari Loevaas, Anna Reynolds, Jean Cox and Richard Trimborn.»

If a large, heavy voice is developed properly, it can have a career of about 30 years.

What excells a dramatic voice?

The main characteristic of a dramatic voice is that it sounds powerful and energetic throughout its entire range. It is essential that a dramatic young singer learns a safe, healthy singing technique that meets the professional demands of everyday stage life. Dramatic singers must be able to sing beautifully and with great power over a voluminous, large orchestra, for example in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. This means not only to challenge the voice in fortissimo but also to sing in piano and mezzoforte full and with an unmistakable, free swinging timbre.

How long does a dramatic voice have to learn?

The development of a dramatic voice takes several years and, in my opinion, is certainly not completed after a university degree. It is particularly important in the transition to the profession and in the first few years of its career that it is well looked after. Especially in the dramatic opera literature it is important that the rehearsal takes place with a trustworthy singing teacher and additional coach, e.g:

Role studies
Musicality and rhythm
Acting skills
Voice training and care
Stage performance
External presentation
Auditions etc.

“I take the time it takes to develop a natural voice into a healthy, expressive and long lasting opera instrument.”

Why especially with Vera Wenkert at the Internationalen Institut Stimmkunst?

Vera Wenkert, the founder and director of the International Institute Stimmkunst, has sung more than 30 leading roles in Wagner, Strauss, Verdi and Puccini operas on various opera stages herself.

“Together with my team of professional pianists from the Zurich Opera and the Munich State Opera, I offer in my Institute Stimmkunst a platform for young dramatic voices to learn the Swedish-Italian singing method. This is the technique which Kirsten Flagstad, Birgit Nilsson and Jussi Björling have made their careers with.” (Vera Wenkert)

“Vera Wenkert is a fantastic teacher, a wonderful person with an enormous knowledge of the voice and a fine ear that nothing escapes. She teaches Swedish-Italian vocal technique, the most famous exponent of which is David L. Jones. With this technique a voice becomes healthy, strong and stays young until high age. I have always had problems and nobody could really help me.

After a fair year with Vera, everything runs like butter. From every lesson I take something new with me, which I can really understand and practice at home. Because the instructions are very precise and clear. Vera knows exactly which exercise she achieves what with and she always recognizes immediately where a problem lies and how to solve it. I am very happy and grateful that I have found Vera, that I don’t have to travel halfway around the world and can finally take lessons regularly again.”

“Studying with Vera Wenkert has completely changed my life. I turned up a confused lyric soprano, feeling this was not my voice type. Within the first lesson, Vera could hear exactly what my true voice type is. Now, 2 years later, I am a blossoming Dramatic Soprano. Everything feels the way it is meant to feel.
Vera’s teaching is incredibly detailed. She can hear if the root of the tongue is blocking the sound, or if the jaw is too tense, the breath not low enough. She has
the ability to pick up on these problems so quickly, and deal with them in and efficient and patient way.

During her Masterclasses, I have seen her meet many international singers with many problems. She is so kind and open with them. I see them feel immediately relaxed, resulting in a quicker response from them to what she is asking them to do. She is so dedicated to singing, students always receive 100% from her. Her non-judgemental, professional and beautiful character, make lessons and Masterclasses an utter joy to be in. I would encourage singers to sign up for her Masterclasses. You will learn so much about the technique of singing in a comfortable, happy and professional environment.»

«I know the often difficult path of a dramatic voice until it comes to bloom. That is why it is my special passion to accompany young singers responsibly on this demanding path.»
